Posted on 11:07 by Unknown
New Canadian Cloud Based Telephone Services Worth a Look -

The Company - Taridium Canada - Burloak Networks Inc.

VIA their website - taridium.com

"Taridium is an open-standards based telecom solutions provider with a global presence. Our solutions are vendor-neutral and are delivered to our customers either directly, or through partner and reseller (VAR) channels.

Our direct relationships with CLEC's (competitive local exchange carriers) and interconnection partners allow us to provide new and ported (existing) telephone numbers in over 12,000 local markets across Canada, the United States and Australia. In addition, we are able to provide new telephone numbers from major cities in over 40 countries around the world.

Because of our geographically diverse network, we are able to deliver any local market telephone services to our customers regardless of their physical location. Today thousands of users rely on Taridium's products and services every day, completing over one million calls every month.

The Customers

Taridium's customer base is comprised of technology partners, resellers, consultants and small to large businesses like law firms, multinational pharmaceuticals, real estate management companies and non-profits. The Taridium VoIP architecture is designed to meet the demands of any size of business. Since we keep our solution open, it offers the opportunity for IT departments, consultants, resellers and any other type of business to maintain their own solution without being completely dependent on the vendor. Typical savings over regular business phone lines from your local phone company (like Bell, Telus, Rogers, Cogeco, etc) run in the 70% range.

Hurricane Isaac Seven Years since Katrina

Posted on 18:05 by Unknown
It's been seven years to the day - August 28th 2005 -  that Katrina hit New Orleans and now Hurricane Isaac, upgraded from a tropical storm to a category one hurricane today (and some reports say category two), is lumbering its way to NOLA. Let's pray that its impact is not anywhere near as severe as Katrina. News reports even now that one hundred thousand in Orleans Parish are without power and Isaac is expected to make landfall near 1AM. Best updates are on NOLA.com

It makes me remember that it's almost seven years since I went to New Orleans for Katrina relief efforts. I was supposed to stay for two weeks but the devastation was so widespread, I stayed for almost six months helping wherever I could. I found a calendar in one house in the Lower 9th Ward we were helping the owner gut out for renovation - the photo is below - and I was shocked when I saw how the black mold had grown over the calendar and marked the date - August 28 - with an eerie black mold silhouette of  Hurricane Katrina. I posted this on Twitpic 3 years ago, but it never ceases to make me wonder every time I see the photo.

And now here comes Isaac and it's August 28th again...

4yrs ago Hurricane Katrina hit NOLA. Found this calendar whil... on Twitpic

One thing I know. the people of New Orleans and all over the gulf coast are survivors and I hope none come to harm by Isaac tonight. Join me in wishing them well.

Event - Help the Homeless - Sandwich Run / Socks donation -
Saturday, Dec. 17th, 6:30pm Toronto

Please join The MeetUp volunteer group: "Help the Homeless with Project417", in a sandwich run and /or socks donation for the homeless. They will be delivering bagged lunches and socks to some of the city's homeless.
YOUR CHOICE: You can either prepare a minimum of 10 bagged lunches or provide 10 pairs of socks for distribution, or both! Please feel free to also bring hats and gloves.
A Sandwich Run involves delivering nutritious bagged lunches to the homeless by walking well travelled routes in downtown Toronto where street people live. You will be delivering the lunches with an experienced team leader, who will guide you every step of the way.
more about the meetup...
This group heads out on the streets a couple of times a month. There are usually about 10 to 15 volunteers - mostly young professionals -  and a rewarding (and fun!) time is had by all. ~ Andy Twitter @canayjun

Knox Toronto Youth Dinner and FoodBank Re-Opens Nov 1st

Posted on 14:04 by Unknown
This volunteer run program provides a hot meal, activities, conversation and some extra groceries to inner-City youth, every Tuesday, November through April. This program is the 2nd phase of what used to be the Knox Out of the Cold youth shelter. We've been cooking for street youth since 1996--how crazy is that??? Volunteers, guests, donors and friends are welcome to join to stay in touch. Visit the Facebook group

For more, see the previous article over at my Wordpress blog The MissionLog, from a couple years back - Knox is still a fun place for the street youth who frequent it. Many have grown up there. In Toronto? Come out and volunteer!
